As a community seeks deeper resolution of issues of violence and mistrust, the restorative justice model creates a space where transformative change is invited. In this process, both parties are invited to share their story and thus begin to arrive at a type of justice that not only acknowledges the pain of the victim but also the most appropriate response that honors the potential of the perpetrator. This has been successfully applied as an alternative to disproportionality in school discipline, criminal justice sentencing, and in a variety of other community settings. Explore alternatives, find lasting justice.
While the Civil Rights Movement accomplished monumental successes, the country still suffers from the inter-generational trauma of structural racism: the relationships of systems that perpetuate social inequity based solely on race. The conversation is no longer about individual acts of racism, but how institutions such as the criminal justice system, educational system, food system, and more all relate to each other to contribute to racial inequity. As we learn again to talk about racism, we do so in a healthy way by beginning with the path of healing as both people of color and white people. We practice living in the world we wish to see.
